What are Dental Implants
A dental implant is the closest replacement to a natural, functioning tooth and is a permanent solution for replacing missing teeth. It involves placing a titanium post into the jawbone to act as an artificial tooth root. Once the implant has fused to the bone over a short period, it builds a strong foundation for a replacement tooth such as a crown, bridge or denture to be placed on top of the Implant foundation. Dental Implants can be performed under local anaesthetic or dental sedation options are available for those patients who may be experiencing some anxiety about the procedure. Sedation can help you feel calm and comfortable throughout the procedure, ensuring it is a stress-free experience.
Why replace missing teeth
Replacing missing teeth is important to maintain a healthy functioning smile and maintain a youthful appearance. The gaps which are left from missing teeth, increases the susceptibility to bone loss, gum disease and ultimately puts pressure and strain on neighbouring teeth, as well as affecting the bite.
Ignoring missing teeth can make it difficult to chew food, and can affect the alignment of the teeth, as teeth will try and fill the void. Another result of missing teeth is experiencing jaw problems due to an uneven distribution of pressure. Without the support from the teeth, the facial muscles may sag, giving a sunken appearance and this ultimately affects an individual’s self-esteem and confidence.
There are various options to replace missing teeth, including Dental Implants which is considered the gold standard, therefore replacing missing teeth is significant in preserving the structure and health of the teeth, gums and jawbone and facial structures.

Advantages of Dental Implants
Closest replacement to a natural tooth:
Dental Implants provide a natural feel and appearance, being the closest replication of a natural tooth.
Preservation of remaining teeth:
The remaining dentition remains un-compromised with the performance of dental implant procedures.
Maximising patients’ expectations:
Comfortable and stable and low maintenance and Improves function, chewing abilities and speech, improving overall wellbeing and confidence.
A Long-term solution:
A long-term investment in a permanent solution to replacing missing teeth.
Preservation and Enhanced Facial Aesthetics:
The jawbone health is persevered, and the facial shape and structures are maintained due to the stimulation of the natural jawbone with the placement of dental implants.
Why consider Dental Implants?
There are various reasons you may consider dental Implants, and they are all personal to each individual, although here are some of the most common reasons:
Difficulties chewing and eating:
For people with missing teeth, or struggling with a current prosthetics such as a dentures or a bridge, there may be limitations to the foods eaten and can have a huge impact on the quality of life and enjoyment of food itself. If you avoid certain foods because of pain and discomfort and make alternative choices, dental implants may be a consideration.
Appearing older than your age:
Missing teeth can create a sunken look, causing the cheeks to sag, and this is based on the bone loss which occurs after a tooth is lost, therefore dental implants may be something to consider, to regain that youthful appearance.
Self-conscious:
A major factor is being self-conscious and not confident to smile or talk, and actively hide away from social situations and photos, therefore dental implants may be something to consider.
Current dentures or bridges becoming a nuisance:
If you are currently experiencing difficulties with a denture falling out, or becoming loose and relying on dental adhesive, or a bridge that keeps failing and needing to be recemented, then dental implants may be an option to consider.
Type of Dental Implants
There are various options when considering dental implants:
Single Tooth Implant:
Single Implants are used to replace a single missing tooth, and the one implant supports the one crown.
Implant-Supported Bridge:
An implant supported bridge is often an option for when multiple teeth are missing in an area, and three or four teeth can be supported by only two implants.
Full Arch Rehabilitation:
Replaces an entire arch with a fixed bridge or removable denture and is supported by 4–8 implants.
Full Arch Rehabilitation
Full arch rehabilitation is a treatment approach used to restore a full lower or upper arch of teeth, or even both arches. It is typically performed for those patients who are edentulous (missing all teeth in one arch) or have severely compromised teeth that need to be replaced. Full arch rehabilitation offers a long term, fixed and permanent solution. There are two options of full arch rehabilitation, including a fixed bridge or a removable denture. They are both permanent and fixed solutions in the sense of having the implants integrated in the jawbone, but in regard to the prosthetics on the top, a bridge is fixed, where as an implant retained denture can be removed.
Fixed Bridge / Teeth in a day:
Involves placing 4 to 6 dental implants per arch, allowing a fixed bridge to be placed on the top. This often allows immediate loading on the day of surgery with a temporary prosthesis. You may here this being referred to, as ‘teeth in a day’ or ‘all-on-4/6’.
Removable Denture:
This involves placing 2-4 implants per arch, allowing the denture to be clicked in place and offer a lot more stability than traditional dentures.

Implant Denture VS Traditional Denture:
If considering one of the full arch options, such as removable dentures, you may ask, what is the difference between an implant denture and a traditional denture? The difference is an implant denture is held or retained by implants placed and integrated into the jawbone, and unlike a traditional denture which require suction and sometimes denture adhesive. Therefore, Dental Implants create a foundation to retain the denture, improving its retention, thereby leading to a successful outcome. Other benefits to an implant retained denture, include them being secure and no need for dental adhesive, enabling you to eat, chew and speak without slipping or shifting, maximising comfort and boosting confidence.
What is the difference between a Fixed Bridge and a Removable Denture?
Ultimately the main difference is, one is removable by the patient, and one isn’t. There is also a difference in cost, a fixed bridge being more of an expense. Overall, each boast multiple benefits in comparison to the other methods of traditional bridges and dentures. Both options offer a long-term solution to replacing missing teeth, providing patients with stability, maximising comfort and giving them confidence.

Implant recovery and aftercare page:
Dental Implant Recovery:
After Dental Implant surgery, the healing process can vary from person to person, and you may experience mild swelling, bruising and bleeding and this can be managed with pain relief and cold compresses. Although, overall, it is a short recovery, and normal day to day, gentle activities can resume within a few days. It is also advised to consume a soft diet and continue with a good oral hygiene routine at home, to ensure a smooth recovery. As part of monitoring recovery, you will be invited to attend regular review appointments, to remove stitches after 2 weeks and ensure the wound is healing well and no signs of infection.
Dental Implant Aftercare:
Post treatment is just as important as the Implant surgery itself, and our team continue to offer support beyond the completion of treatment to ensure your oral health is monitored and maintained.
There are a few aftercare instructions we give to patients after undergoing implant procedures, including:
To control any pain and reduce swelling take Ibuprofen (if appropriate for you) or Paracetamol. For more severe pain these can be taken in conjunction with each other. Please do not use aspirin as this can lead to bleeding.
Do NOT eat or drink until the local anesthetic has completely worn off.
Keep to a light diet for the first 4 months after full arch surgery, e.g. Rice, fish, pasta. For smaller cases likes single implants this isn’t necessary? (need to confirm with kk if this is just for full arch cases or small cases- so can make it read clearer)
Do NOT rinse out your mouth for 24 hours. After 24 hours rinse morning and night with the chlorhexidine mouthwash provided.
AVOID hot drinks, hot food, hot baths, alcohol and exercise for 24 hours as bleeding may start again.
Do NOT carry out any vigorous nose blowing for 2-3 weeks after your surgery. If you feel the need to sneeze allow yourself to do so through an open mouth.
Gentle steam inhalation can be helpful to ease any congestion.
Please continue to take all antibiotics as instructed at your appointment.
Continue your usual routine of tooth cleaning in any unaffected areas of your mouth.
To prevent swelling wrap an ice pack in a damp tea towel and place against the outside of the face. Keep the ice on for 10 minutes in every hour. Repeat this as often as possible for the first 6 hours.
If bleeding persists after leaving the surgery do not be alarmed. Moderate oozing is normal after these procedures. We give you gauze packs incase there is oozing, and this is to be placed directly over the area, biting down, applying pressure for 15-30 minutes.
If you experience excessive or persistent bleeding, severe pain or swelling or have any concerns that things are not progressing as expected, you will be provided with the implant teams direct number, as well as the surgeries for advice.

If you’re missing one or more teeth and want a secure alternative to dentures or bridges, dental implants in Southport could be right for you. During your consultation, our implant dentist will assess your oral and general health using advanced digital scans and CBCT imaging to confirm your suitability.
