The purpose of dental hygiene appointments:

Our Dental Therapists and Hygienists are dedicated clinicians performing treatments such as scale and polishes and advanced airflow treatments, for the prevention of gum disease and decay and maintenance of oral health. Professional cleaning from our registered dental professionals can remove plaque, biofilm, tartar and staining which can be difficult to remove with just brushing alone. They can advise you on the best oral health products, diet advice and preventative treatments.

We offer:

  • Scale and Polish appointments and Airflow Treatment.

  • Most patients will be used to traditional scale and polish treatments, and airflow treatment may be something new. Take a look at our advanced airflow system;

    What is Airflow?

Airflow is a professional dental cleaning system that uses a combination of warm water, air and fine powder particles to gently remove plaque, staining and biofilm from the teeth and gums.

Airflow is safe and efficient in accessing all areas, to remove biofilm, staining, plaque, and reach below the gum line, including deep pocketing. It is also proven to be efficient with implants, crowns, restorations, and orthodontic appliances.

What is biofilm therapy:

You may also hear Airflow referred to as ‘Guided Biofilm Therapy’. Biofilm is a sticky film made up of harmful bacteria which long term damages the teeth and gums if left. Biofilm is the starting point to most dental issues including, bad breath, tooth decay, gingivitis and gum disease. The main purpose of Airflow, or Guided Biofilm Therapy is to maintain oral health, and prevent and control these oral issues.

Benefits of Airflow:

  • Gentle and pain free

  • Excellent stain removal

  • Leaves teeth visibly cleaner and brighter

  • Improves the gum health

  • Reduces caries rates

  • Faster and more comfortable than traditional dental cleaning techniques, reducing chair time without compromising on the results

  • The use of warm water is great for those suffering with sensitive teeth

  • Great at accessing usually inaccessible areas

  • Safe for enamel and soft tissues

Dental Hygiene Q&A – Professional Cleaning in Southport

Q: How long is a hygiene appointment?
Appointments typically last 30–40 minutes, depending on plaque, tartar, and staining levels.

Q: What does a dental hygienist do?
Our Southport dental hygienists focus on prevention — cleaning teeth, checking gums, taking X-rays, and teaching you how to maintain great oral health at home.

Q: How often should I see a hygienist?
Most patients benefit from visits every 6 months. If you have gum issues, we may recommend more frequent appointments.

Q: Why are professional cleanings important?
Daily brushing helps, but hygienist cleanings remove hardened tartar and detect early gum disease — keeping your smile healthy and fresh.

Q: Does dental cleaning hurt?
Cleanings are gentle and usually painless. For sensitive teeth, numbing gels or Airflow polishing can make treatment more comfortable.
